The role

As an Applied AI Engineer at Mainframe, you will play a critical role in the development of AI-driven features that impact users directly. You will stay ahead of the latest trends in large language models (LLMs) and applied AI, working closely with our cross-functional team to create cutting-edge tools that deliver real value. You will be an integral part of our growing team, helping us scale to the next level of innovation.

In this role you will:

• Lead the development and deployment of AI-powered features from concept to production.
• Build and refine evaluation frameworks to optimize AI models, including prompt engineering and retrieval techniques.
• Implement and optimize embeddings and vector-based search for scalability and performance.
• Collaborate with users to understand their needs and rapidly iterate on AI-driven solutions that address real-world challenges.
• Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in LLMs and AI technologies, applying these insights to improve Mainframe’s products.
• Work closely with engineers, designers, and the founding team to bring cutting-edge ideas to life.
• Experiment with cutting edge AI models and APIs alongside other engineers, designers and design engineers.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in AI or product-driven companies.
• Proven experience in shipping AI or LLM-based solutions to production environments.
• Familiarity with semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), embeddings, and vector databases.
• Proficiency in Python, TypeScript, or similar, and frameworks like Next.js
• Strong ability to build features end-to-end, with a focus on delivering high-impact solutions.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment with evolving priorities.
